A tavern an inn and the stupid

After defeating that stupid rogue..i learned that i am now owner of knifethrowers..and i didnt even have to pay for this wonderfull cloak.... i do believe though that it would be best if we go to a larger city that i get 2 things...but i believe im not ....wealthy enough to obtain them... one is a pair of gloves...they make me more dexterous and this is always good for me..the other is a ring...a ring i will treasure even more then the rings i have worn..... speaking of rings..im going to have to kick kalestri..i bet she forgot to recharge my other ring...wow...i got 4 rings..i think i should start sharing withthe group...hmm... but who needs a ring of mind shielding..eh...

I always encourage player to "plann-out" their character's progression with the DM. So I can appreciate the direction you wish Slyl to go in. The Forgotten Realms by default is a high magic style campaign. However, I am interested to know just how Slyl is so informed as to the nature of magic items? I would feel more comfortable if you directed Slyl toward asking, finding, seeking, rather than determining the exact specifics of items that would optimize his abilitites. Sincerely, wanting better dexterity is something any character can desire. Operating a character as if that character had a copy of the DMG 3.5 is entirely another matter.

well tom actually im playing it like slyl lived in one of the largest cities with a very large caster population (if im correct waterdeep actually has the largest amount of mages/sorceres per capita) and im not playing it like he KNOWS how much these magical items he wants cost..if i where to actually find out how much the cost slyl would be feeling like he got a major deal. remember also..whats his face emptied the knifethrowers coffers for my cloak..and some other things... slyl can be a little niave at times.. and thinks that must of been more then he remembered it being... that or the guy spent way to much for next to nothing

oh..and as an aside..and not to be "jerkish" but a rogue at my level would actually want a ring of blinking and 1 rapier of speed and deadly precision and 1 short sword of speed and deadly precision.... though i dont believe i have even gained enough money to ever have bought those.. say i never spent a dime... thats 2 weapons at +5..thats 50000g just for the magic..and anouther 600 for masterwork...thats a lot of money but essentialy thats what a rogue would want.. personaly i believe slyl to be informed enough to know that there are magic items that improve your abilities..and has probably seen a rogue w/ a ring of invisibility..brag about it....

I agree that you are the expert on your character. I agree that Slyl's Waterdeep background is a good tie (justification) to my question. I disagree with only one of your statements, "...a rogue of my level would want a ring of blinking and 1 rapier of speed and deadly precision and 1 short sword of speed and deadly precision/".

As a justification, I simply don't buy that statement, not because a mid-level character wouldn't want more specialized magic in general, but because it defines these items as "common knowledge", like a grocery list.

I don't think you were being, "jerky" at all. I actually appreciate the overall explanation you provided.

I simply hold the belief that the actual character must "encounter" this knowledge in-game. That is, even with a Waterdeep background (back when Slyl was 1st level), would you say that every 0th or 1st level rogue in Waterdeep could identify the items "quoted" above? Hmmmnnn, it is a stretch for me to think so.

Considering Slyl's experience (level advancement 1-8) in The Vast, I don't recall any "encounters" with these specifics. (Nor is Kurth on par with Waterdeep as a major magical metropolis.) I am also not trying to be "jerky" either. Can you see my point?

I am open to friendly debate on this. Also, Slyl's backstory does not mention any exposure to rogues wielding magic, nor did Slyl study at The Bindry in Kurth during his downtime opportunity. Each of these examples could further justify knowledge that, "a rogue at my level" might know. To my knowledge, neither has occurred in this campaign. Do you see my point?

yes i understand your point...the whole aside thing was to point to you real metagaming. where as i only think i am looking for something slyl would have heard of... the aside is not what all rogues would know about..but is was a total metagamer would go for... as being able to sneak attack all the time w/ only a 20% miss chance and having everyone else have a 50% miss chance is just wrong (though now slyl may know that there are monsters that have this really neat ability..i may ask around about it)..also speed and deadly precision would give me an extra attack w/ each weapon and deal 2d6 more sneak attack damage. personaly i still feel that slyl would know there are magic items that can improve your strength, dexterity, intelligence, fortitude(con),charisma and will... he isnt very apt on where or how to get them, its more of like "heard it through the grapevine" stuff. if this doesnt seem correct please tell me and we will talk on it
